Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme
The Ukraine Permission Extension (UPE) scheme allows Ukrainian nationals and their eligible family members to extend their stay in the UK for up to 18 additional months. This is available to those who previously held permission under:
- Homes for Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme
- Ukraine Family Scheme
- Ukraine Extension Scheme
Applying is free and helps maintain your rights to work, study, and access public services in the UK.
Please read the official UK Government guidance before applying:
Visit GOV.UK - Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme
Apply only when you have 28 days or fewer remaining on your current visa.
Do not apply earlier – your application may be rejected.
If your permission expires before applying, you could lose your right to:
• Work
• Rent property
• Claim benefits
To determine the optimal time to apply, you can use the OPORA UPE Calculator
Before applying, ensure you have:
• UKVI Account: An active UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account with access to your eVisa.
• Identity Documents: Updated identity documents (e.g., passport or biometric residence permit) linked to your UKVI account.
• Biometric Residence Permit (BRP): Your expired BRP card, if applicable.
• Proof of Residency: Evidence of living in the UK.
For detailed guidance and to start your application, visit the official GOV.UK page.
Note: If your documents are not in English, certified translations are required.
Children Applying with Parents
• Children can apply as part of a family group, but each child must have their own application.
• If a parent is applying, they should submit separate applications for each dependent child they are applying on behalf of.
• Children must be in the UK and currently have valid permission under one of the Ukraine schemes.
Children Born in the UK
• A child born in the UK after 18 March 2022 to a Ukrainian parent who holds permission under a Ukraine scheme is eligible to apply under the UPE.
The parent must submit:
- The child’s UK birth certificate.
- Evidence of the parent’s own valid immigration status.
- If both parents are Ukrainian and have permission, either parent can apply for the child.
If only one parent has permission, the child is still eligible as long as that parent is the applicant.
You’ll need:
- The child’s birth certificate
- Proof the child is living in the UK
Biometric Requirements
- Children under 5 years old do not need to attend a biometric appointment.
- Children aged 5 and above may be required to attend an appointment to give biometrics.
As part of your application for the Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme, you may need to provide biometric information and proof of identity. This is an essential step to verify your identity and continue your stay in the UK.
What Are Biometrics?
• Fingerprints
• A digital photograph of your face
Applying with the UK Immigration: ID Check App
- Most applicants can verify their identity using the UK Immigration: ID Check app
- The app allows you to scan your passport or BRP and upload supporting documents.
- If you need to attend a UKVCAS appointment, additional documents can be uploaded free of charge on the UKVCAS website.
- Assisted document scanning is available at UKVCAS centres for a fee
If You Don’t Have a Valid Passport or BRP
You may still be able to apply using alternative identity documents, including:
- A recently expired Ukrainian international passport
- A valid or recently expired Ukrainian national ID card
- A combination of documents showing your name, date of birth, and nationality (e.g. birth certificate + photo driving licence)
- An Emergency Certificate issued by Ukrainian authorities since March 2022
In these cases, you’ll need to attend a visa application centre (VAC) for biometric collection.
Successful applicants will be granted:
• 18 months of permission to stay in the UK.
• The right to work, study, and access public funds.
After You Apply
• If more evidence is needed, you’ll be contacted by email with clear instructions.
• Make sure to check your email, your junk folder regularly and respond by the deadline.
If there are any issues with your digital status, you can contact UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI).
You can report an error with your eVisa online.
For help with appointments and document uploads, or to find your nearest VAC or UKVCAS centre, visit the TLScontact website.
Please note: This extension does not count towards settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain).
Important Notes
- Do not travel abroad while your application is being processed. Leaving the UK could void the application and may impact re-entry, as this is a UK-based extension.
- Applying after your permission expires may result in losing rights and having to repay benefits received during the decision period.
- You may be asked to submit extra evidence if needed.
If you are not a Ukrainian citizen but are part of a Ukrainian family, you may still be able to apply for the Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme (UPE). This allows you to stay in the UK for up to 18 more months.
You may be eligible if:
- You are the spouse or partner of a Ukrainian national and still in a genuine relationship.
- You are a child or stepchild of a Ukrainian national.
- You are the parent or legal guardian of a child who has permission under one of the Ukraine schemes.
You already have permission to stay in the UK under a Ukraine visa scheme, like:
• Homes for Ukraine
• Ukraine Family Scheme
• Ukraine Extension Scheme
You must also be in the UK at the time of application.
What Documents Will You Need?
To prove your relationship, you may need:
• A marriage certificate (if you’re a spouse).
• A birth certificate (if you’re a child or parent).
• Any other official documents showing your relationship and that you live together or are in a genuine partnership.
Once you’ve submitted your application for the Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme (UPE), here’s what you can expect and what you should do next.
1. What Happens Next
• You will receive email updates from UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).
• If they need more documents or if you must attend a biometric appointment, they’ll let you know by email.
• You should not travel outside the UK while your application is being processed — doing so could affect your application.
Viewing and Proving Your Immigration Status
If your application is successful, you will not receive a physical visa or BRP. Instead:
• Your immigration status will be recorded online.
• You can access it through your UKVI account.
You’ll get an email inviting you to create or log in to your account. Once signed in, you can:
- Check your status and visa expiry date
- Prove your right to work, rent, or access services
- Share your status with employers or landlords using a secure code
It’s very important to keep your personal details accurate in your UKVI account. You must update your account if:
You change your email address
You get a new passport
You move to a new home
Your name or relationship status changes
You can update your information at:
www.gov.uk/update-uk-visas-immigration-account-details
Keeping your details current ensures that you can always access your immigration status and avoid problems when proving your rights in the UK.
